What can I say, I have a soft spot for BG&E and it’s no secret. I was even more pleased to receive the news about the premiere of the refreshed version. Re-reading this title was also an impulse to write a description of a unique place. A place full of secrets and hidden metaphors. This is Jade and Pey’s house.
Attention! The material will contain spoilers about the plot! I encourage you to read the text after beating the game!
A quiet orphanage
Before I start my journey through this amazing building, I would like to remind you that this title comes from 2003. For its time, it presented a mature plot and a map full of details. However, from today’s perspective, it all seems very archaic. Nevertheless, it is worth reading this work, especially since it is not particularly long.
The story presented in Beyond Good and Evil takes us to a fictional galaxy called System 4, where the planet Hillys is located. It is here, on a small island, that Jade and Pey’s house is located, which serves as a lighthouse. Jade’s adoptive uncle, Pey’j, is responsible for the construction of this facility. The hangar and lighthouse were built shortly after the two arrived on Hillys in 2415.
What is important. Our heroes do not live alone on the island. The lighthouse also serves as a temporary orphanage for children whose parents were kidnapped by DomZ. Jade and her uncle try to keep their six children safe. For Yoa, Zaza, Oumi, Fehn, Pablo and Kip, the island becomes their real home. The whole is complemented by a large shaggy dog, originally called Woof.
On the island, apart from the lighthouse building, you can also find a pleasant cliff with a huge tree and a place for practicing yoga. Which Jade uses when teaching meditation to one of the orphans. In addition, there is also a small yard and an entrance to the hangar where the hovercraft is located.
Lighthouse
The island on which the lighthouse is located is located south of the town gates of Hillys. Despite the heavy maritime traffic around the metropolis, the lighthouse does not only serve as an orientation for passing ships.
It is also a shelter for all the island’s inhabitants and a point of spreading a special shield protecting the waters around the island. However, for all this to work, you need electricity, which you have to pay for… a very mature theme. And Optima Service is responsible for the energy supplier.
The building is one large staircase, where the spiral staircase defines the appearance and arrangement of subsequent floors. At the very bottom there is something like a living room with a kitchen equipped with an island. If I could compare the architecture of this room to something, it would be to residential buildings in the area of the Mediterranean islands.
White limestone plasters with a stone foundation are something you can easily find there. In the case of the room in question, I would also pay attention to the amazing finish of the island countertop itself. It is a beautiful mosaic that refers to the extremely characteristic skylight located on the top level.
There are rooms on the upper floors, but they have a walk-through and semi-open structure, so it is difficult to clearly say which belongs to whom. Nevertheless, I would point out a lot of interesting details.
An anchor lying freely on the floor somewhere, a common bed for all the kids, paintings on the walls made with crayons by the children or the previously mentioned beautiful skylight. We should also not forget about Jade’s photography studio, where there are photos hanging like from a Polaroid camera.
A hangar full of secrets
However, the most interesting things are yet to come. On the other side of the small island there is an entrance to the hangar where our hovercraft is permanently located. The hangar houses a small marina where you can charge the vehicle and a small workshop belonging to Pey’ja.
This place hides another secret. A huge hangar where the Beluga is located, the spaceship on which our heroes flew to Hyllis. To reveal this location, enter the code from Pey’s shoes in two consoles. Only then will the place next to the marina be open to us.
And I think it was these details and the slow discovery of subsequent rooms that made me remember this place so well. Of course, from today’s perspective, it no longer makes such an impression, but in 2003? It did!
I bought the game Beyond Good and Evil – 20th Anniversary Edition with my own funds.
