My favorite book is “We, the Drowned”, which tells the story of an entire generation of sailors from the small Danish town of Marstal. I will not hide the fact that this novel accompanies me in many important moments of my life and perhaps it contributed to the special attention I devote to the urban planning of seaside towns.
Redfall, I’m calling you!
Anyway, the visit to Redfall was quite pleasant, although I will admit that I did not complete the title due to the HUGE number of amazing titles we are bombarded with this year. I must admit that the title differs from the previous achievements of Arkane studio , creators of the brilliant Prey , which I described here !

Either way, the visit to the town itself was quite interesting. It cannot be denied that I felt quite at home in Redfall. Why? Because the fictional town of Redfall is located somewhere on the coast of Massachusetts in the USA, and from here it is just a stone’s throw from the Appalachians that I traversed in Fallout 76 !
During my several-hour journey, I only visited the town, completed a few quests and killed several dozen enemies. All the time, somewhere in my head, I had the impression that it was some kind of mod for Fallout 76. All because of the very similar buildings.
Inspirations from Europe
Redfall is an example of a town with a long history in the USA. Of course, it is difficult to estimate, but it is clearly visible that the town has a very irregular street layout. The paths wind and intersect at different angles, the roads serpentine merrily go up and down. The buildings are placed parallel to the streets, not on a grid plan, which is clearly visible on the West Coast.

This is simply due to the history of the region. The state of Massachusetts was one of the first to receive settlers from Europe (17th century). It’s no wonder that they designed their new place to live just like the previous one. This is clearly visible on the map. The waterfront is densely dotted with ports, further inland there is a slightly denser center, and the whole area is connected by a network of roads.
Write a picture of a standard European seaside town with room for a port. It’s an obvious and clear layout. On the sea side there is space for dock and port workers, then there is usually a small break, in the center there is a place where the lives of sailors’ families take place, and furthest from the port there are residences for the more affluent. And there is no shortage of them in Redfall!

Placing the action of the game in such a place is quite a convenient idea. On the one hand, the playing area is limited by the sea, on the other hand, the town is surrounded by hills. Towards the west there is only one tunnel carved in the base of the mountain, but as you can easily guess, it is also “magically” plugged.

You can move on to the next area only after completing the canonical task, but be careful here! You can’t go back after that, so it’s better to explore the entire town before moving on.
Colonial, neo-colonial, neo-Gothic and neo-baroque architecture
Who among us hasn’t dreamed of living in one of these beautiful colonial-style houses while watching movies from the 90s? I still like them very much, although they are hard to find in Poland. Houses in this style have many names and, depending on the region and the owner’s preferences, they can have very different finishes.

There are plenty of such houses in Redfall. Those located closer to the port usually have a very simple structure and do not have many decorations, but those located further away are real residences that please the eye and arouse envy.
The vast majority of houses in Redfall represent the colonial and neo-colonial style. These are most often simple, rectangular buildings with a gable or hipped roof and two storeys. They are quite spacious and certainly everyone has seen them while watching movies taking place on the East Coast of the USA. They are covered with a facade called siding. Some of them have a slightly diversified shape by adding a bay window, where a dining table is most often placed.

Further from the port, however, we can find more sophisticated structures. These residences represent styles such as neo-baroque and neo-gothic. Roughly speaking, it is also a simple shape like in the case of colonial houses, but by adding refined joinery, impressive terraces or complex roof carpentry, they create a completely new quality.
In the city of classics!
What else did I like about Redfall? Certainly, it’s a city that I’ve seen hundreds of times in movies and games! The creators from Arkane included practically all canonical elements for this type of location in their town.

There is a water tower, a general store, a gas station, port buildings and, of course, the center of our resistance movement, i.e. the fire station building.

The fire station building in Redfall is an example of neo-colonial architecture, but in the form of a public building. The siding has been replaced by a brick covering, rustication is visible on the corners of the building, and the whole is complemented by a delicate roof detail. Inside, there was a pompous display of the previous commanders.
There is a climate
I had no expectations for this title. Maybe it’s because I don’t like the concept of vampires (and zombies). This title certainly didn’t convince me to love vampire atmosphere, but just visiting the city and shooting was quite cool.

What I liked the most was the “stopped” water in the port. The huge wave hanging over the entire port is impressive! It’s a pity that this title is not even half as good as such pearls as Prey, but every studio has better and worse titles. You can have fun, the town of Redfall is quite charming, there is something to keep an eye on and you can visit it if you are a fan of Fallout locations and vampire atmosphere.
